We were caught off-guard by a wall of snow as a rare ice snowstorm 'Storm Deidre' hit Edinburgh Castle, Scotland in 2018. 2 inches of snow shut down the mostly temperate and snow-free city for days.
One of two flights that were still cleared for travel, our plane had to re-land after 'blizzard-lightning' hit our trans-Atlantic flight! We weren't going home after all, and all the local hotels were full, the airline said to pick anywhere!
An hour later we are enjoying cocktails in the Waltdorf Astoria lounge, telling our harrowing tale next to a fire. Alas, a few days in the cold rarely-used ante-wings of the Waldorf Astoria overlooking a snowy Edinburgh Castle. Best layover, ever.
